Wooden bridge

Rapperswil
The region was known to visitors from the North already during the Middle Ages.
Lake Zürich is situated on the route taken by the Jacob pilgrims who also visited Rapperswil on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
A somewhat unsafe, tortuous wooden footbridge with loosely laid planks helped them make their way across the lake. A passable dam, in existence since the 19th century, enables people to cross over at the lakes narrowest point between Rapperswil and Hurden. But the footbridge also still exists and was only replaced by a new, 841 meter long modern bridge in April 2001.

Crossing this new bridge is a unique experience: To feel as though one is walking over the middle of the lake and being connected to both coasts at the same time is truly amazing. A picnic area on the Rapperswil side of the lake enables visitors to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
